Is Jump Height Genetic? (Can It Be Trained?)

'I was born unable to jump' is one of the most harmful misconceptions in athletics — because it stops people before they start.

This is the mirror image of the genetics myth: the heritability numbers are real, but they describe populations, not your next two years.

The variance split

Published estimates put the genetic share of CMJ variance at roughly 40–80%, depending on the population studied; training and environment explain the rest. Even genetically fixed fast-twitch ratios can be optimized through training.

The real-world range

Untrained young adult men often jump roughly 30–45 cm; after one to two years of well-structured training, many reach 50–65 cm. Ranges are lower for women and shift with age, so use sex- and age-appropriate reference values. The gain that comes from training is real — but it is a range, not a promise.

What is actually locked in

Fiber I/II ratios, limb proportions and tendon attachment points explain only a small share of variance. If you have not trained systematically for 2+ years, you do not know your ceiling yet.

What heritability does and does not mean

Heritability estimates (commonly 40–80%) describe how much variance in a population is associated with genetics — they do not set an individual's fixed ceiling. The remaining variance is environment and training, which is exactly the part you control.

The untrained-to-trained range

The real-world range is the strongest argument: many untrained young adults start around 30–45 cm, and 1–2 years of structured training commonly moves them to 50–65 cm. Individual, sex and age differences are large — so treat this as a plausible range, not a guaranteed outcome.

The practical ceiling test

You can only discuss your ceiling after two or more years of systematic, assessed training — with a strength base, a periodized plan and re-test data. Until then, 'genetics' is a label for untrained potential, not a limit.
