How it works & limitations

Two systems, side by side

Wilks is the classic normalization: coefficient = 500 / (a + bx + cx2 + dx3 + ex4 + fx5), where x is bodyweight and a-f are sex-specific constants. IPF GL is the formula IPF adopted in 2020: coefficient = 100 / (A - B x e^(-C x bodyweight)), with separate coefficients for 3-lift and bench-only, and for men and women. Scores from the two systems are NOT directly comparable: a Wilks score of 400 is very strong, while an IPF GL score of 400 would be impossible with the 2020 formula. Always state which system a score uses.

Reading the GL bands

The bands are community context calibrated on real competition data. In recent international meets, elite national totals score roughly 115-130 GL, elite international lifters 130-150, and the best all-time performances reach about 150-160. Use them as orientation for goal-setting, not as an official ranking.

Which one should I use?

If you compete in IPF-affiliated meets, use IPF GL. If you follow older rankings or want the classic standard, use Wilks. For self-tracking, pick one system, keep the same event and formula, and compare your own trend over time.

Is Wilks still used?

Wilks remains the most widely known normalization, while federations increasingly use alternatives such as IPF GL points and DOTS. Scores from different systems are not directly comparable, so state which system a score comes from.
