How it works & limitations

Which test to choose

Cooper and 1.5-mile runs require a maximal effort and suit trained individuals. The Rockport walk is submaximal, making it safer for less fit or older people. The resting-HR (Uth) method needs no exercise: VO2max ~ 15.3 x (HRmax / HRrest), and is a quick screening estimate rather than a field-test-grade number. Field tests typically carry an error of roughly 3-5 ml/kg/min.

VO2max and jumping

VO2max is a health and recovery metric more than a jump predictor - explosive power depends on the neuromuscular system. But a solid aerobic base speeds recovery between jump sessions and supports the work capacity to train more often. Use the category as a health check and trend tracker, not a jump-performance score.

Protocol notes

Warm up, run or walk on a flat measured course (a track is ideal), and record time or distance accurately. For the Rockport test, measure heart rate immediately at the finish. Repeat under similar conditions to track change.
