Depth Drop

The preparatory exercise for depth jumps — the depth drop teaches safe, efficient absorption of landing impact (eccentric strength), laying the safety foundation for explosive rebounds. Step off a box and only absorb the landing without jumping. Quieter landings = better eccentric control.

Hamstrings, glutes, quads (eccentric control)3-4 sets × 3-5 reps
Depth Drop 4-step technique breakdown: setup, execution, peak extension, and recovery for vertical jump training

Coaching cues

  • 1.Land as quietly as possible — the best cushioning
  • 2.Hips, knees and ankles flex together to absorb
  • 3.Hold the landing position 2s — no wobble
  • 4.Start at 30cm, progress to 60cm

Detailed training method

[Steps]1. Stand on a 30-60cm box→2. Step off→3. Absorb the landing with both feet→4. Land as quietly as possible→5. Hold stable for 2s→6. No jump [Common Errors]✗ Loud landings→insufficient cushioning ✗ Knees cave→push them out deliberately ✗ Jumping immediately→learn stability first [Progressions]30cm→45cm→60cm→single-leg landing→eyes-closed landing [Jump-Specific]The preparatory exercise for depth jumps; learn to absorb impact safely before rebounding; landing volume = eccentric control level
